I recently had the honor of being selected by the Mayor of Dallas, Mike Rawlings, and the DFW Hospital Council for a partnership called Growing Little Minds. This initiative is being rolled out to the new mothers at the hospitals within the DFW Hospital Council.
The DFW Hospital Council consists of 88 hospitals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. I actually had my daughter, McKenna, at Texas Presbyterian, which is a member of the group. I attended the official Growing Little Minds press conference with some fellow DFW area mommy bloggers. It was held at the new Parkland Hospital. You can view the press release here. The program was specifically designed to help increase the babycare awareness and the benefits of parent-child interaction amongst first-time moms in the DFW area.
I believe that it is very important for a mother to begin assisting with their child’s development from birth. Babies brains are like sponges, waiting to soak up knowledge. There are several studies that prove the more you interact with a child in their early ages, the better developed their brain becomes. By spending time with your child and sparking various senses, you are giving your child a better chance for success in life.
Some of the ways you can do your part in your child’s early development as a new mother include:
- Hugging and holding your child
- Singing to them
- Playing peek-a-boo
- Reading books to them
- Tummy time
