I hope everyone had a fabulous Labor Day Weekend! I spent my Labor Day Weekend at the Sanctuary Cap Cana in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. I went with my boyfriend for an extended weekend and just got back Wednesday night. Minus the airline canceling my flight and losing my luggage on the way there, I was still able to make the best of the trip.
We flew into Punta Cana airport on Saturday afternoon. I set up a private car service through Dominican Plus, which was $62 round-trip. I did this because they allowed you to pay through PayPal ahead of time with a credit card, and I also did not feel like being haggled at the airport.
I booked our resort through Gilt Travel, which gave us a discounted rate on our room. We ended up staying for four nights total at the Sanctuary Cap Cana by Alsol. The Sanctuary Cap Cana is an adult’s only all-inclusive resort. It is a smaller resort and was about at 70% capacity while we were there. If you are looking for a chill spot with mostly couples this is the place for you. If you are looking for more of an adult only party resort, I hear the Excellence Punta Cana is a good one.
The resort is only about a 15-minute ride for the Punta Cana airport. It has many different types of rooms throughout the grounds. We ended up booking a garden villa, which came with its own butler and private yard. Since the resort is small it is easily walk-able.
There are several restaurants to eat at on the property and they also have 24-hour room service. My favorite restaurant was the sushi restaurant; the miso soup and Mongolian beef were delicious. You did not have to have reservations for any of the restaurants for dinner except for at The Wok, which is a hibachi restaurant.
Since I didn’t have luggage I had to hit up the boutique at the property a few times to buy a swimsuit and other necessities. Luckily they had the essentials for me to make it through the holiday without my luggage.
There are various types of pools throughout the property, but almost everyone hung out at the main pool and the beach. We bounced back and forth between the two because you could easily get a chair at either. The only thing that there seems to be a shortage of was the blue pool floats that everyone used as his or her drink holders while in the pool. The beach was not very big, but it was also so close to the pool that you could hear the waves while you were in the pool. The one thing I was surprised by was the amount of seaweed on the beach. There was a net that was surrounding the beach to keep it out, but every morning the seaweed managed to make its way on shore. Every day there was a clean up crew raking the seaweed and hauling it off in the morning. The staff definitely put a lot of time and effort in keeping the shore seaweed free.
One lesson learned about this trip is that I will always book a direct flight. The missing luggage hiccup was not ideal.
What is the best island in the Caribbean? Do you have any suggestions on other beaches to visit that are all-inclusive and child friendly? I would love to hear about them. I am always looking for new places to discover. 🙂
By the way… I did get my luggage, the night before we left. Go figure!
