There are many varieties of diapers to choose from. I personally have never used a cloth diaper because I have somewhat of a weak stomach and would have a hard time cleaning them. So I will focus on the diapers that I have tried which is the next feature in the series “Necessities for Your New Baby”.
As a new mother you will be given a lot of newborn diapers, my suggestion is to find one that you like and return the rest that are unopened. Newborns go through a ton of diapers so I also would like to suggest that you buy in bulk. I normally buy from Target because they run specials a lot where if you buy two boxes you get a $10-$20 Target gift card which I usually apply to the next diaper purchase. They are currently running this special here.
When McKenna was a newborn I tried the following brands: Pampers, Huggies, Dollar General, Target Up & Up, Honest Company, LUVs, and Babyganics. The Pampers and Huggies brands have multiple types of diapers so pay attention to what you are buying, not all diapers are made the same.
After trying all of these brands, hands down my favorite for newborns was the Pampers Swaddlers. They fit McKenna the best and did not leak. When I used Huggies Little Snugglers which is the comparable diaper there were a few times where I was having to clean up blow outs which was hard for me to stomach. As a new mother you will learn that the consistency of poop when your child is a newborn is a liquid. You need something that will keep that mess in the diaper and off of their clothes. The Pampers Swaddlers also have a yellow line that turns blue when wet so it is visible when you have to change your baby’s diaper. You also wont’ be that person sticking your finger in your infant’s diaper to peek inside or raising them up to sniff their behind. My second choice for newborn diapers is the Honest Company and third is Babyganics. Both of these brands are made of more natural materials, but they also are on the more expensive side.
As McKenna got older I reevaluated the diaper situation. When she was 11 months old I ended up switching her over to Target’s Up & Up brand. Since she was on mostly solids at this point our need in diapers had changed. These diapers work great for us, and are easy on the bank.
What are your favorite diapers? I would love to hear about other diaper recommendations for a toddler.
