Mommy and Me Monday – Akola Jewelry

Fashion/ Little Me and Free/ Mommy and Me Monday

Happy Monday peeps! I hope everyone had a great weekend. I just drove in from Houston this morning and I am exhausted! I am hoping this week flies by because we are leaving on Friday to go to Disney World! This will be McKenna’s first time to go. I can’t wait to see the look on her face when she gets to meet all of her favorite Disney characters in person. My parents will also be joining us for the trip; so the trip will be extra special for her. For this edition of Mommy and Me Monday we are featuring items from Akola Jewelry.

Akola Jewelry is part of the Akola Project which was founded by Brittany Underwood in 2004. Their headquarters are based here in Dallas, TX. It first started as a way to empower the women in Uganda, by creating jobs for them and putting 100% of the proceeds back into the organization.

Akola, which means “to work” in their local dialect, is a 100% Full Impact Brand. Per the Akola Project’s website, Akola  was founded on five fundamental methodologies. They include the following:

  1. Community-led strategy and implementation.
  2. Defined social mission with fully measurable impact.
  3. Integrated financial literacy training and ensured access to relevant financial services.
  4. Strategy to restore community perception of internal strengths and potential.
  5. Targeted capacity building that equips individuals with resilience and the lasting ability to achieve desired change in their lives.

For our looks we decided to wear all-white. Both of our shirts and jeans are from Old Navy. My Akola necklace is called the Berry White Tassel, which is made up of hand rolled paper beads in various colors and finished with a white leather tassel. Since Akola is a women’s jewelry line, McKenna’s lilac bracelets were custom made for her out of hand rolled paper beads to fit her small wrist.

In addition to Uganda, the Akola Project has expanded it’s organization to helping women in the Dallas area as well. If you live in the Dallas area, feel free to visit their flagship store in Snider Plaza.
